Classes

To prepare your caregiver and yourself for the transplant process our experienced staff provides many educational and supportive activities. Listed below are some of the available programs:

Teaching for Transplant

The Teaching for Transplant class reviews the transplant process, symptom management, low microbial diet and infection prevention. The classes are provided in a relaxed and interactive environment and taught by knowledgeable blood and marrow transplant nurses to provide information about what to expect in the process of blood and marrow transplantation. The class is strongly recommended for all patients and caregivers prior to transplant.

The classes are held in the Cancer Center Conference Room (Room 2105) on Tuesdays (except holidays), 2:30-4:00 p.m. Classes are free and there is no need to register. It is only available for patients, their relatives and caregivers who have been accepted into the BMT Program.

Classes for autologous patients and families are held on the first and third Tuesday of the month. Classes for allogeneic patients and families are held on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month.

Catheter Care and Self-Injection Class

This class teaches you how to care for your central venous catheter required for transplant and how to give injections. This class will be scheduled by your case manager for individualized teaching.

Caregiver Education and Support Group

The Caregiver Educational and Support Group is a group for the caregivers to share experiences and gain information about the BMT process. This program provides educational information on various topics as well as emotional support. This is a good opportunity to meet with other family members and friends who are in similar circumstances to discuss common concerns. Many family members have found this program to be both helpful and informative. This group meets each Wednesday from 10:30 am - 12:00 pm in the conference room outside of the BMT Unit (E1). No appointments are necessary.
